Moral Dilemma.

We we have an issue, that instead of talking it through and studying it out in our minds to come to a rational and moral conclusion, we are making you decide.

Here's the deal: (and we really need you moralists to come out of the woodwork, 'cause there are not a lot of moral people who read this blog.)
For Lindsay's family's Christmas present we ordered them a book (hardcover) of our pictures from all our travels in the past few years. (It was a big hit and turned out great.) After ordering, Lindsay got a conformation e-mail to let her know that they would be sending the book in a few weeks. Well, we had known that it would take that long and so we had specified that we needed it shipped to Utah (Connie's house). After reading the e-mail, Lindsay noticed that they were shipping it to our Billing Address (in Hoboken), so she emailed and called and a very nice man told her that he could change the address and would ship the book to Utah (Connie's house). And he did. We got the book, we gave the book, they loved the book. It was all good.

Our dilemma: We came home from Utah (Connie's house), and there on our doorstep was another copy of the book (the first one ordered and sent to the wrong address). So... to send it back would be a waste, as it is printed pictures of us, but to keep it would be wrong? Yes? No? After they fixed the order, they refunded the cost of the first book (now in our possession). So, now what? Just tell us what to do and then we'll do that. If you want to post anonymously so we don't know that you don't have any morals, then do; or, if you're Chris Clark and it's well known--well, you can just post next to your picture.

The ethical thing to do is to contact the company that made the book, tell them what has happened, and ask if they want you to return the book. They will say, "No, there's no reason for that, since it's just pictures of you and we don't care what you look like, so just keep it," and you will say, "Thank you kindly" and sleep with clean consciences. And as you know, I am a leading authority on ethics.

I agree with Eric. I had a situation with Target last year where they shipped me the wrong size rain boots, and after correcting their error, they didn't want the other ones back. I guess when you factor in shipping, processing, etc. it was a wash. (the boots were only like $15). I'll bet that they won't want it back and they can't charge you for their mistake either, because they don't want to be at risk of 1) losing a customer or 2) want it to look shady or fraudulent on their accounting records.

Okay. . .I read this a couple of times, but it sounds to me like they KNEW it was going to go to the wrong address, but arrive there in error, when it really needed to go to Utah, so I think you're fine to keep the book without even contacting them. I think you already contacted them the first time. Also, I don't think you should have to pay for a company's stupidity. I maybe shouldn't be trusted, though, as I have two identical rugs, one brand new in my basement. . .and I'm pretty sure I didn't contact them. But it's sure going to come in handy in a few weeks!

Keep it. And rest easy. I agree with my wife. Lots of company's do this because technically they would have to pay the return shipping (it is their error)and then they are spending even more money on a mistake. You are doing them a favor. You can give it to Petie and I so that people can see that we have pretty friends.

keep it. true that if you contact them you'll feel better about keeping it though.

(that's creepy that you ordered ONE book of your personal photos to be printed, and then when it was shipped incorrectly they just sent out an extra copy that was laying around...)

also: save the picture to your desktop, then re-upload to blogger.

Eric Snider + give what the book would have cost to charity. Beat that.

Thanks, everyone! We appreciate all your moralizing.

Jared - We don't know what you're talking about with the picture stuff. Please elaborate.

Jared is talking about the image in your post. It's a bugger on the website that is asking you not to link to their picture (to preserve bandwidth). :)

I thought you put that there on purpose... as a juxtaposition. Sorry!

I think is is just wonderful you are having a moment of conscience, and I am proud of you to have made such a spectacular gift for Lindsay's family, of your favorite, most fabulous pictures and it is karma that you should have one for you too.
That is my take.

There is actually a law that if a company sends you something you did not ask for, you are not required to A) return it or B) pay for it. It was in reaction to those 12-for-1 music companies and some borderline fraud-like practices. If a company bills you, you just have to call and say, "I did not order this and I will not be paying for it." and that's that. (I worked in customer service for awhile and dealt with this regularly)

So in keeping the book, you are merely abiding by the law and keeping them honest. Don't enable bad business practices in our corporations. Keep the book.

We kept the book and feel great about it as you, our friends, are our moral compass'.

That way it's not our fault.
